Through the object of the chair, I explore ways of living and social structures. To me, a chair is not merely a tool for rest, but a symbolic medium that reveals human attitudes and choices, the distance within relationships, and the ways in which society accepts difference.

The starting point of my current body of work comes from the story of the Ant Chair. When it was first designed with three legs, it was rejected by the public because it felt unfamiliar. Later, when it was redesigned with four legs, it achieved commercial success. As time passed, however, the three-legged version also came to be accepted as one of the representative forms of the Ant Chair.

Observing this process of change, I became deeply interested in the ways in which things that deviate from the standards of the majority are accepted within society, and in the conditions under which majority and minority can coexist within that structure.

I have also been inspired by scenes in public spaces such as subway station benches, where seats meant for sitting together and seats meant for sitting alone coexist. A life oriented toward sharing and a life oriented toward individualism are simply different directions toward happiness, and this led me to focus on the structures and emotions of a society in which these different ways of living exist at the same time.

In this way, my work seeks to visualize, through the formal and symbolic characteristics of the chair, how familiarity and unfamiliarity, majority and minority, community and individualism collide, stand side by side, and at times remain in harmony within the same space.

A chair exists quietly, yet it fully contains the identity and experiences of the one who sits upon it. By revealing the stories embedded within this quiet structure, I imagine the possibility that different ways of living may come to understand one another and remain together.

저는 의자라는 사물을 통해 삶의 방식과 사회적 구조를 탐구합니다.

의자는 단순한 휴식의 도구가 아니라, 인간의 태도와 선택, 관계의 거리, 그리고 사회적 수용의 방식을 상징적으로 드러내는 매개체라고 생각합니다.

지금 진행하고 있는 작업들의 출발점은 '앤트체어'에 대한 이야기에서 비롯되었습니다. 처음엔 세 발의자로 만들어졌던 앤트체어는, 당시 대중에게 익숙하지 않다는 이유로 외면받았고,

이후 네 발의자로 재설계되어 상업적 성공을 거두었습니다. 그리고 시간이 흐른 지금은 세 발의자 또한 앤트체어의 대표적인 모습으로 받아들여지고 있습니다.

이 변화의 과정을 보며 저는 다수의 기준에서 벗어난 것들이 사회에 수용되는 방식, 그리고 그 안에서 다수와 소수가 공존하는 조건에 대해 깊은 관심을 갖게 되었습니다.

또한, 지하철역 벤치처럼 공공의 공간 안에서 '함께 앉는 자리'와 '혼자 앉는 자리'가 공존하는 풍경 역시 제 작업에 중요한 영감을 주었습니다.

공유를 지향하는 삶과 개인주의적 삶, 그 모두는 행복을 추구하는 서로 다른 방향성일 뿐이며, 이러한 다양한 삶의 방식이 동시에 존재하는 사회의 구조와 감정에 주목하게 되었습니다.

이처럼 제 작업은 의자의 형식적, 상징적 특성을 통해 익숙함과 낯섦, 다수와 소수, 공동체와 개인주의가 어떻게 같은 공간 안에서 충돌하고, 병치되며,

때로는 조화롭게 머물 수 있는지를 시각화하고자 합니다.

의자는 조용히 존재하지만, 그 위에 앉은 이의 정체성과 경험을 오롯이 담아냅니다.

저는 그 조용한 구조물 안에 내재된 이야기들을 드러내며, 다른 방식의 삶들이 서로를 이해하고 함께 머물 수 있는 가능성을 상상합니다.
